Abstract
The Sudan Household Health Survey 2006 (SHHS) provided valuable information on the situation of children and women in Sudan. The survey collected core baseline social indicators for the principle purpose of informing public policy formulation, planning and providing a starting point from which progress towards Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and other quality of life indicators could be measured. SHHS was also intended to provide up-to-date information for assessing the situation of children and women in particular to strengthen the institutional capacity needed to carry out some of the aspects of the up-coming censuses and other subsequent surveys. In the large part the need to monitor progress towards goals and targets emanating from the national plans and international agreements. The Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), adopted by all 191 United Nations member states in September 2000, and the plan of action of A World Fit For Children (WFFC) adopted by 189 member states at the Special Session on Children in May 2002 and the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in 2004.
All of these commitments were built upon promises made by the international community at the 1990 World Summit for Children and at the ICPD in 1994. In signing these international agreements, the Government of Sudan committed itself to improving conditions for children and to monitoring progress towards that end. Interviews were successfully completed in 24,527 from which one 146,723 household members were listed. The specific objectives of the survey are:
1. To provide up-to-date information for assessing the situation of children and women in Sudan.
2. To furnish data needed for monitoring progress toward goals established by the Millennium Development Goals, the goals of A World Fit For Children (WFFC), ICPD Programme of Action, and other internationally agreed upon goals, as a basis for action.
3. To contribute to the improvement of data and monitoring systems in Sudan and to strengthen technical expertise in the design, implementation, and analysis of such systems.
4. To strengthen and build the institutional capacity of the government partners for the 2007 Census and large scale surveys.
