Data Collection Notes
The training of fieldwork was conducted in all the states during the months of January and March 2010. Training took a period of ten to twelve days and it was conducted on three levels: national level, regional level and state level.
This was led by the state manager as the principal trainer, the state management team and the central supervisor successfully facilitated the training sessions similarly. The whole training included lectures on interviewing techniques, content of the questionnaires, how to supervise and monitor the quality of the data, make interviews between the trainees to practice on how to approach and how to translate the questionnaire into local Arabic as well as how to conduct the interview.
Towards the end of the training, the trainees were divided into groups with the facilitators and they put the knowledge into practice in order to test the understanding of the participants. The methods used in the training were PowerPoint presentations, group discussions, role plays, recap and the test of questionnaires which were used in the field work known as the pre-test. Supervision
Right after the deployment, all the teams started the field work in the states and EAs were assigned. All the sampled areas were covered during the period of the field work. The sample (approximately 1000 households per state) selected for each state were covered with the exception of two EAs which were not covered due to insecurity, each team had to cover 5 EAs.
It is worth mentioning that in the 25 states of the whole of South Sudan, 40 clusters/enumerated areas were selected and within each EA, 25 households were selected for interviews from the total number of households listed. Out of the 25 households selected for interviews, 10 households were selected for blood samples.
The state management team was divided according to the teams and they went together with the teams to their respective counties. The aim of doing this was to make sure the teams had security within their EAs. Afterwards they started the field visits to the teams after every three days to see the progress of the work and to see whether there were any problems, the operation stopped on April 10, 2010 due to national elections. The remaining teams resumed the fieldwork on April 23, 2010 and ended on May 3, 2010.
