Abstract
The fifth Population and Housing Census of Sudan covered the whole country at the same time. Both the north and south used the same tools, methodologies and procedures. The census enumeration took place from April 22, to May 6, 2008. During this period all the people who spent the census night in Sudan were counted. One of the objectives of the census was to provide accurate information, which was lacking on the distribution of the population which would have been the primary source of information for all development planning processes. Other objectives of the census include:1. Describing census activities to allow users to interpret the accuracy of the census results as well as to understand any limitations of the data.
2.Guiding future census planners by providing a general record of the procedures and processes used so that the planners of the next census can benefit from previous experience, documenting both successes and failures, and giving rationale underlying the decisions made to keep future planners from making the same mistakes and preventing them from wasting valuable resources.
3. Providing basis for international comparability by describing the success or failure of the census procedures used in Sudan, which may help other countries in similar circumstances determine whether they should use the same procedures. This also allows for the exchange of information on content and procedures.
